A Muslim woman was attacked by Muslims in Luton, in the midst of a majority Muslim community. Many Muslims went by and watched without helping. Some have since found it funny or excusable on Facebook streams (these aren't accesible publicly unless your friends with the contributors).
My thoughts on the subject: How ashamed Muhammad (pbuh) would be of us. Where are the days gone when any attack on the honour of women was worthy of blood? Now we commit these crimes ourselves, then we glorify and justify them: disgusting.
I could never imagine any of our Prophets pelting eggs at someone, anyone, let alone a woman going about her job, a Muslim woman at that.
I make Dua that we will see the truth clearer, that we will reflect our faith in our actions more than we preach our faith. Good conduct maybe our best defence.
It's not just an MP in Luton. Many of us face these kinds of insults, from Muslims and non-Muslims on campus and on the streets.
What would you do?
Campusalam has two main sections that can help you when you are under such pressure.
Engaging the Brain offers resources on how to speak to someone's brain instead of their emotions, a key for calming down confrontational situations. In particular I like these pages: Preventing emotional Hijacking, How things get Hot and How to take the Heat Out.
Communicating in Difficult Situations: Whether it's dodging flying eggs or answering someone who calls you a ______ , this section has great knowledge and tips on how to communicate in difficult situations. My personal favourites are Quick Tricks, Intent Vs Impact and Dealing with poisonous conduct.
Now it's your turn. Let us know what you would do in this situation.
Politics - damned if you do damned if you don't!
Engaging calmly is the only way to ensure another person will first listen to you not just hear you. Engaging aggressively will only embolden attitudes no matter who little credibility they have. This is why Allah states "Invite people to the way of your Lord, through wisdom and beautiful preaching..." 16:125
