Are morals without God a delusion?

Adam Deen and Andrew Copson face-off on morals and religion. Who won?

The event was well attended with a mixture of Muslims and atheists in the audience. Both speakers spoke well about their subject matter with both speakers raising strong points. Ahmed argued that objective moral values do not exist without God, whereas Andrew had a different construct of morality which wasn’t entirely clear but based around one’s experiences and genetic make up.

I think Ahmed could’ve have pressed Andrew further on what he defined moral values to be, but didn’t do so. I also don’t think Andrew’s position that the humanistic approach to morality where you do ‘good’ because society has determined what is ‘good’ to hold merit. He argues that within religions there is a diverse range of opinion as to what is moral. I would argue that the diversity is far greater between cultures and societies, and that there is far more uniformity within religion on moral values.

Andrew seems to think society is becoming more moral, I put it to him the case of the increase in adultery in today’s day and age but he didn’t necessarily think it was immoral. You can’t win with such people.

One controversial argument that was raised by Ahmed was, “Rape is arguably advantageous for the progression of a species. Why is it wrong then from a humanist perspective?”

At one 1:17:18 Andrew states adultery may or may not be immoral...how can adultery ever be morally right??
