FlashPOD: Islamophobia and the Extremism Debate at Leeds Uni

Leeds students analyse the problem of Islamophobia and the "Extremism" Debate and its impact on campus.

Key Questions Discussed:

1. The Challenge of moderation in Islam in your life as a student.

Prophet (PBUH) hadith the middle way is the best is reflected around the ideas of moderation, try to apply this to life as a student.

Feel as if it is hard sometimes but try to apply this through my actions towards others Muslims or non Muslims.

Extremism is not what Islam teaches. It can be difficult to be moderate, as living away from home, it’s easier sometimes being away, practically and spiritually.

2. After the 7/7 bombings being linked to Leeds, do you feel this has affected your time at Leeds University?

Felt really welcomed at Leeds University especially the Union, very diverse in terms of views. I wear hijab and was a bit worried but it wasn’t an issue at all. The ISoc has been very active and involved with other faith societies ( Christian Soc, ) to ensure that a positive image is reinforced on campus.

Students sometimes are a bit apprehensive in asking questions, but don’t feel it’s because they have no awareness, but maybe more that they want a bit more clarification.

3.What solutions could be offered to Muslim students and the Islamic Society?

Through active Dawah and interfaith on campus, like events that Isoc hold like Discover Islam Week.

The way in which you portray yourself is very important. Not being intimidated or scared about what people can say, students in seminars sometimes question, feel best way is to be positive and open-minded in approach.

Holding government into account, using politics as a means to get message across, the student Union is active, so utilise it. Be knowledgeable in both Islamic perspectives as well as others- use other societies on campus, very active ones that would support.
