My Name is Stephen and I'm Not a Terrorist

Recently returned from a trip to India, which incidently is a great place, during my stay I watched a Movie with a message worth bringing home.

Movie: My name is KHAN,

Year: 2010,

I knew nothing about the movie, the story, the plot... all I knew was Shah Rukh Khan is huge in India, he's everywhere you look. You must go and watch this movie. Admittedly its a feel-good movie and the brain should take a rest. But the message - that no religion, including Islam, preaches violence against the innocent comes across loud and strong! Something of a Bollywood version of Forrest Gump and Rain Man. Even better, there's no dancing!

The movie is a brave and decent attempt to bridge the great cultural schism of our time. Kahn and Johar frame the religious wars the way they (and many of us) see them: religion as competing tribes of faith affiliation, versus religion as a common struggle to find and practice love of God shared across different faiths worldwide. The film properly acknowledges that each faith tradition has feet in both camps.

The world may be an ugly place, but in the words of a song heard throughout the movie, “We Shall Overcome.”

Maybe the new Campusalam T-Shirts should read 'My name is (person's name), and I am not a Terrorist'.

The Guardian reviewed it back in February:
