Knowledge Central > Foundations of Islam > What about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the Sunnah and the Sirah?

The Prophet Muhammad is believed to be the last prophet to mankind, before whom came other prophets, including Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The prophecy of Muhammad is believed to be a continuation of the Abrahamic message of God.

As the Qur’an is the word of God for Muslims, so the Prophet Muhammad is the word of God in action, the ‘living Qur'an’. This means that for Muslims the Prophet is the role model for how they should behave and understand the Qur’an. Another major source of guidance for Muslims, therefore, is the Sunnah, the 'trodden path', the sayings and actions of the Prophet (pbuh). The Sunnah sets the norms for Muslim life and conduct, amplifies and applies the Qur'an to daily life, and is one of the primary sources for Islamic law. The narratives of the Prophet's (pbuh) life developed into an important genre, Sirah Rassul Allah, the tradition of biography, and it is traditionally another source of guidance and reverent study.
