Violence in Islam is not encouraged. Arbitrary violence is unlawful, however, using violence as a form of defence is broadly regarded as acceptable in the case of oppression or acts of injustice if all other means fail. Violence should be controlled and regulated according to laws of war in jihad. Having said that, whether violence is acceptable in Islam depends on the definition of what the political ends are. It is well established that the end does not justify the means, which implies that the apparatus used in achieving any aim should be completely in accordance with Islamic teachings and must not abrogate the purpose of Islam. Most Muslims, for example, agree that violence can be used as form of defence, but disagreement occurs on whether one can be involved in offensive wars that might save peoples’ lives.
