Knowledge Central > Religious needs > What are 'religious needs'?

Religious requirements are those practices that a person of a particular religious faith is obligated to fulfil or uphold. For Muslims, religious requirements are practices which are prescribed by God for the benefit of the individual and the community, and every effort should be made to uphold the law. These practices are meant to increase God-consciousness and help Muslims develop a disciplined life that welcomes the good and rejects the bad.

With the diversity of student populations in Universities and an increasing number of international students coming to study in the UK, many Universities are trying to provide for the needs of their religious students. The main religious requirements of Muslims one might come across in the University context are prayer, dietary restrictions and fasting. Many Universities also make an effort to try to accommodate the religious requirements of their students by trying to avoid timetabling exams on religious days or festivals and offer students of sincerely held religious observance the opportunity to complete a form stating their requirements prior to exams.
