If there is an issue with a particular person and you're trying these techniques, don't expect it to work the first time. People do change - if it suits them to change - but sometimes change takes time.
BUT some people are not amenable to normal persuasion and healthy social interaction. Some people fully intend to have the negative impact that they have. Unfortunately there is a small percentage of the population who are lacking in empathy, have no conscience, or are committed to being deliberately manipulative, exploitative, and destructive. They might seem nice, full of concern, sharing your interests and values at first; and the extent to which they can poison relationships and situations only becomes evident over time. They often seek out people who they see as ‘vulnerable’ because they are kind, compassionate, have a conscience, and care about other people. Being a good and engaged person may make you a target.
If your best efforts seem to have no effect, and above all if any acts of kindness or ‘sharing your feelings’ are used against you – you are probably dealing with one of these hard-core cases. Do not continue to operate in normal ways. Different rules have to apply.
Tips on dealing with really poisonous conduct.
