Skills Toolbox > Dealing with people > Engaging the brain > Signs that the thinking brain is engaged

- People let others speak and finish what they’re saying
- They understand the person’s point of view: if they don’t, they ask questions for clarification, not ridicule
- ‘I can see why you see it that way’, ‘I hear where you’re coming from’ – they can see the reasons why someone could hold a different opinion to their own
- They can see good points and bad points, strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages to all points of view – including their own
- They look physically relaxed or calm, their tone of voice is more even
- They can take constructive criticism and see how their own thinking could be improved
- They don’t take a disagreement as a personal attack on their own worth
