Skills Toolbox > Dealing with people > Engaging the brain > What drives up the emotional temperature?

- Not listening to what people are saying
- Not allowing them to speak, interrupting
- Twisting their words and misrepresenting their opinions
- Exaggerating their views to show how stupid or bad they are
- Ridiculing them or their ideas and beliefs, or using sarcasm
- Horrible comparisons – to Nazis, fascists, traitors, kuffar, mushrikeen, and so on
- Certain phrases – usually exaggerated or disrespectful; like: ‘You always’ ‘You never’ ‘People like you’
- Disrespectful body language and facial expression, shaking head, rolling eyes
- Tone of voice – especially exaggerated, such as: ‘I CAN’T BELIEVE what I’m HEARING! So you REALLY think that EVEN if…’

The key to a good discussion is not how intelligent people are, or even how nice they are. It is how emotional they get. So the sign of the expert leader is the ability to manage conversations and situations so that people use their ‘thinking brain’ as much as possible – not being taken hostage by their emotional brains.

What raises your emotional temperature?
