22nd Sep 2009 to 25th Sep 2009 Official Report: Freshers Week 2009

Societies, Unions, Freebies, Parties, Gyms, Clubs, Credit Cards, Pizza and all things in between made up the bustle at Freshers Fayre(s) across England! Amongst these you may have bumped into the Campusalam team!

Here at the Campusalam office last minute activities in preparation for the grand fresher’s tour 2009 went on till exactly that – the very last minute!

We made sure we had lots of activities for students to get involved with when we finally got to meet them.

Our aim to go out onto campuses and meet as many fresher’s as we could took us to the Midlands, the North and back to London.

Fresher’s everywhere were loaded with excitement and eager to be involved on campus during their time at University which was great news for Campusalam who support students to ‘dream it up and make it happen’!

The University halls, foyers, lecture theatres and sports centres were filled to the brim with stalls aplenty. Students were bombarded with information packed plugs on where’s the best place to eat, the cheapest gym membership, which phone network offers the best tariff, what cause is worth joining a society for and which clubs to come to and on and on and on – you get the picture!

Students seemed more than happy then to tell Campusalam what they thought – We asked them what events they wanted to have on campus.

Events
Using the Campusalam events tally chart students from up and down the country voted on one of six event options, so far a debate event on ‘free mixing: relationships, gender interaction and ‘halal dating’ is in the lead but there’s plenty of time for students to vote!

FlashPODs
Students in Bradford had two fantastic FlashPODs; again throughout the day students sticker voted on FlashPOD topics making ‘Are parents out of touch with their children’s expectations of Careers and Marital Life?’ the topic of a live FlashPOD that afternoon.

Another group chose an entirely spontaneous topic related to ‘drugs and the student scene’. You can visit or join either FlashPOD or start your own here.

HD Camera Competition
Campusalam decided to push the boat out and offer a Free Creative Vado HD Video Camera to the student(s) who puts together the best FlashPOD on their campus. If you didn’t see us at your Fresher’s but still want to be in with a chance to win a camera, follow the directions found here.

Thinking Gallery
The thinking Gallery is always floating in the midst of other Campusalam activities, it is a huge blank sheet with a statement or idea that provides food for thought, instigating students to add to the original thought with any of their own reflections. Fresher’s 2009 began with a philosophical query and later a political hot potato; the subjects are as varied as can be.

Vox Pops
Campusalam is always ready to capture student comments and responses to issues that affect them, this allows students to self represent. At fresher’s the vox pops got students telling us what they thought their Campusalam is on their campus. Stay connected on Campusalam to see what they said!

We made lots of friends on lots of campuses and look forward to lots of events and trainings together soon so watch this space!
