Respect for the Prophet

What special considerations apply to the Prophet for Muslims?

The practices that show reverence to the Prophet (pbuh) differ according to different schools, customs and cultures, but we make some generalisations here.

  • When the name of the Prophet is mentioned Muslims are strongly encouraged to wish him peace [peace be upon him and his family and his companions].
  • The Prophet (and also other prophets) should not be depicted in drawings according to many traditions in Islam.
  • Showing disrespect to the Prophet (pbuh)by making jokes about him or speaking of him in derogatory terms is likely to cause hurt and cause offence to Muslims.
  • The Prophet (pbuh) is treated as a human being and not as a divine figure.
