As God's revelation, the Qur'an itself is accorded the greatest respect.

The practices that show reverence to the Qur'an differ according to different schools, customs and cultures.

We present below the more meticulous observance; not all may find these conditions obligatory.

They may instead feel that the words and meaning deserve the utmost reverence but not necessarily the physical book.

One must be ritually clean, if necessary performing wudu' or washing, before touching the Qur'an or reading it.

• The Qur'an should not be written on.
• The Qur'an is put above all other books on the shelves.
• Usually the Qur'an is not put on the lower shelves or on the floor.
• The pages of the Qur'an should not be folded or scraped. They should not be thrown away, but should be burned if it is necessary to dispose of them.
• Verses of the Qur'an cannot be tattooed on the body.
• If some verses of the Qur'an are used in calligraphy, then it should be treated with similar respect.
