How far should we make provision for Muslims' requirements about eating and about fasting in Ramadan?

Halal food and fasting

It is a religious requirement for practicing Muslims to consume only permitted (halal) food and drink, and to fast during daylight hours of the month of Ramadan (the Muslim calendar does not exactly correspond to the Gregorian calendar, so the month of Ramadan falls on a different Gregorian date each year).

The University has a responsibility to try to meet the needs and requirements of its students. Many Universities across the UK who have opted to provide halal options in canteens or have opened halal restaurants and cafes have a sizable number of Muslim students either from the UK or abroad attending the University and therefore have felt it appropriate to meet their religious needs.

Similarly, depending on the lecture timetable, universities or colleges with evening teaching decide it is both sensible and sensitive to be indulgent of student discreetly ending the fast during a lecture
with a few dates or a biscuit.
