First, identify the likely cause(s) of the lack of good material. Is it:
- Lack of funds to buy good books
- Neglect – no-one has taken an interest in it
- Material is dominated by one perspective, perhaps because the person in charge only is aware of or only will buy books supporting that viewpoint, tradition, school of thought, madhab…
- No space to store them
- Assumption that there is no interest in them
- Theft or books going missing – no adequate system for borrowing or using books and ensuring that they are returned
If the cause is lack of funds, explore ways of raising the money needed (books can be expensive!)
- Subscription to the society
- Small fundraising event
- Seek a donor, perhaps a store selling Islamic goods – do be careful in your choice of donor so that you don't find the viewpoint of books restricted even more
- Everyone buys one book for the library and donates it
- Funding for student societies that might exist in the university
If the cause is neglect, theft, lack of a system, or lack of interest – step into this role yourself, preferably enlisting the involvement of others who share your concern.
If the cause is domination of the viewpoint of those in charge, raise your concerns with them.
- Approach the situation proactively but without blame. Separate impact from intent.
- FOSIS, the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, is a good port of call: http://www.fosis.org.uk/
- If the situation is still friendly, speak to those who manage the society. Make sure that you mention specific areas that concern you. Vague complaints or criticisms are almost never helpful because the person doesn't know what to change.
- Also be sure to have specific positive suggestions. See our tips on how to get your point across successfully:
