Upload Your Video

Production finished, now you're ready to share your movie with the world. This tutorial will get your video uploaded on YouTube and beyond.

1. Upload to YouTube

Follow this step-by-step tutorial to get your video on YouTube.

  • Go to www.youtube.com.
  • Login to your YouTube account (no YouTube account? See the tutorial in Module 2.
  • Make sure your video is less than 10 minutes and smaller than 2GB in size.
  • Click the UPLOAD button in the upper-right-hand corner of any YouTube page.
  • Click the "Browse" button to browse for the video file you'd like to upload to our site. Select the file you want to upload.
  • Click the 'Upload Video' button to start the uploading process.
  • As the video file is uploading, enter as much information about your video as possible in the relevant fields (including Title, Description, Tags, and Category). You're not required to provide specific information, but the more information you include, the easier it is for users to find your video!
  • Choose whether to make your video PRIVATE or PUBLIC. If it's private, then only you and 25 other people who you invite to view the video can see it.
  • Click the 'Save changes' button to save the updates you've made to the video file.

NOTE on Tags and Description: Tags are keywords help other people to be able to find your video by searching and by viewing related videos. Enter in as many tags as you like, the more the better. In YouTube, each tag is one word long. If you have a two-word tag, make it one (e.g. communityorganising). Your video description can also help people to understand your video. Read here for more.

  • Back to the tutorial: It will probably take 30 minutes to a couple of hours to upload a large video file. Fix yourself a drink and come back to it. Uploading is a good time to add more tags and make your description even better.
  • Have more than one video file to upload?
Not a problem! You can upload up to 10 video files in a single uploading session.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PRIVACY: If you do not want your video up for the world to see, select the option to make it private. Even if you uploaded it as public, you can make it private by following these steps and share it with a few friends. Remember to enter gettingthewordoutuk as a friend so that people in our project can view your video.

Did you know? You can share your videos on Facebook and Twitter automatically. Click on UPLOAD and follow the instructions under AutoShare Options.
