Filming Tips and Tricks for Handheld Cameras

These simple techniques can turn your video footage from ameteur to professional.

To get started, watch this video from freevlog.org on using a handheld camera to shoot your project at Freevlog.

This video highlighted some important tips and tricks:

  • Handheld cameras can be very shaky. Use a “natural tripod” by resting your arm on a table or other flat surface when possible. If you must move, do it very slowly and as smoothly as possible.
  • The microphone works, but only at close range. If you want to get someone speaking, try to hold the camera close to them. If you are shooting outside, be aware of wind. Try to stand with your back to the wind when possible.
  • The camera does adjust to different lighting conditions, but try whenever possible to shoot in well lighted areas without shadows, particularly in interviews. See this interview which was shot in shadows for an example of what NOT to do.
  • Count to 3 (silently!) at the beginning and end of every shot. These pauses will make it easier for you to make clips later on.
