The Game of Life

Play this game in small groups, make it competitive or co-operative.

The participants are divided into small groups of approximately four people in each group.

Each group will have the choice of voting 'red' or 'blue' in ten consecutive rounds of voting. They decide the vote amongst themselves, keeping it secret from the other groups. They decide it knowing what the rule of the vote is:

1. If all the groups vote blue, every group gets 1 pound (or 1 point).

2. If all the groups vote red, no one gets any points.

3. If some groups vote red and some blue, the ones who vote red will get 10 pounds (or ten points) and those that vote blue will get nothing.

In each round, each group decides their vote and writes it down. The facilitator reads out the votes and allocates points accordingly.

At certain intervals (such as after rounds 3 and 6) the leaders of each group convene separately for negotiations to see if they can reach agreements on the next round of voting.

The purpose of the game is to give people the opportunity to work co-operatively so that all win, or competitively pursuing their own advantage, including the opportunity to take advantage of others' good will and see the results.
