Get informed and get active.
Agree a strategy with those concerned. An effective strategy will have all or most of the following components:
- Build rapport or co-operation with key individuals, and call in support from your network of relationships
- Gather further information and gain greater understanding
- Set goals or targets. These may be informal.
- Get agreement for the strategy, and mobilise resources, support, assets – above all human ones
- Create an action plan if the complexity of the strategy warrants it; or at least agree on the policies to be implemented or the action to be taken by each actor
- Monitor progress and evaluate, even if informally
